Education

In the height of budget season, most clubs focus their effort on a line-by-line approach to “next year’s operating budget”, without considering critical big picture items like the capital budget and long-term financial planning. This workshop will approach budgeting strategically from the top down zeroing in on how budgeting should intersect with strategic governance, capital planning based on a capital reserve study, net worth trends and long-term financial planning. While most clubs budget one year at a time off the operating ledger, the alternative is to look three to five years down the road and work backwards. Such an approach fosters strategic governance while “forcing” the Board to think strategically. Club Benchmarking data shows 50% of clubs have real net worth declining over time. We will use this fact to conduct a workshop that will forever change the way attendees view budgeting, club finance and the financial planning process.

Given the topic, we encourage managers to bring their controllers to this meeting.
