Best Practices and Board Orientations
Dave Duval and Joe Abely of Club Board Professionals, LLC will lead a discussion of Best Practices in club settings and orientations for Board members. Working with several NECMA member General Managers, Dave and Joe have developed a comprehensive audit survey that quickly acquaints participants with Best Practices and identifies areas for improvement.
Dave and Joe have each served on the Boards of their New England based clubs (Brae Burn CC, Charles River CC and The Quechee Club) for more than a dozen years including long stints as Treasurers and Presidents. They led their clubs through major transformations before forming Club Board Professionals, LLC. They also draw on board experience in multiple other settings. Biographies are attached.
In this presentation, they will review the results of their 2017 Best Practice Audit survey that was completed by more than 100 clubs. Participants will also be invited to complete the 2018 version of the survey to see how you compare to your peers. The Best Practices Audit covers Board & Governance matters, Strategic and Capital Planning, Committee work, Finance & Controls, Use of Debt, Human Resource management and several other topics. The discussion will drill down on each of these critical areas. A link to the online survey will be provided to all participants in advance of the meetings or can be obtained by any club representative directly from Dave or Joe.
While many consultants make good recommendations and move on, Dave and Joe seek to work with a select number of clubs on a long-term basis to ensure that their and other good recommendations lead to good results. They see annual Board orientations as a critical component of ensuring the training, people and processes are in place to manage clubs and implement long term plans consistently and effectively across multiple administrations. Effective Board orientations will be discussed in depth as part of this educational session.

Dave Duval served as a Trustee of Quechee Lakes Landowners’ Association and The Quechee Club in Quechee, VT for four years. He was President and CEO from 2014 though the end of his term in 2016. During his tenure he focused on upgrading governance practices; the completion of a membership survey and 5-year business plan; improving communications with members; financing a new $5 million indoor and outdoor Aquatics Complex; integrating committee and Board activities; implementing more meaningful financial reporting; and developing a 10-year Integrated Funds Plan. The plan established the groundwork for several years of capital improvements designed to modernize the capital base, increase membership satisfaction and attract new buyer/members. Immediately prior to his role at Quechee Lakes, he served on the Board of Governors of Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre, MA for 8 years and as Treasurer for 6 of those years. During his tenure, he assembled a peer group of Club Treasurers, General Managers and Controllers in the greater Boston area for the purpose of sharing financial information and promoting best practices. While serving as Treasurer he oversaw a survey of the membership and developed and executed against a long-term financial plan resulting in the completion of an extensive list of member-satisfying capital improvements totaling close to $17 million. At each Club, he negotiated appropriate levels of debt on favorable terms.
Dave is a Certified Public Accountant and earned his undergraduate degree from Bentley University and his MBA from Babson College. During his 40-year professional career, he served as the EVP/CFO of a privately held group of companies and more recently as a partner in venture capital firms that helped more than 80 portfolio companies fund and execute carefully crafted plans for more than 20 years. He has served as a Director and Officer of several companies, non-profits, clubs and associations.

Joe Abely served on the Board of Directors of Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, MA for 12 years. Over that period of time he was Treasurer for 6 years and President for 3 years. During his tenure Joe oversaw the return of the golf course to championship caliber; renovation of the main member dining venue to create a more efficient and enjoyable dining experience; the renovation of the pool complex to address the growing family utilization and addressed the service culture of the Club. He made the use of an annual membership survey an integral part of measuring the satisfaction of the membership and areas for the Club to focus on. Over the last 10 years Brae Burn undertook almost $20 million dollars in capital improvements that added to the membership experience. These capital improvements were funded within the existing dues and fees structure with no borrowings or additional member assessments.
Joe is a Certified Public Accountant and earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College and his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Over his 40-year career he was a partner in a major international accounting firm and served as CEO/COO/CFO of public, venture-backed and non-profit entities. He has also served as a Board member of a variety of public, private-equity backed, non-profit and membership organizations.
