IMAGE ASSESSMENT FOR CLUB MANAGERS
Help yourself!
Your professional image has little to do with a phrase most often used in buffets, though you can surely gain from helping yourself to this assessment tool. This Online Image Assessment is a tool, and, as is usually the case with any tool you use in your profession, there are some instructions that must be followed. While most of us can probably "wing it," More information. Service Provided by ClubNet®
PROFESSIONALISM, IMAGE, EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
These are just a few key words or phrases that keep us employed and earn us a compensation package that is fair and just for the responsibilities and duties of a Club Manager. As Career Services Chairman for your Association, I am often reminded of the injustices of dismissals, the disappointments of job rejections and the vast array of salary ranges in our industry. It is only when we all focus on Professionalism, Image, Education and Professional Development that we can bring some equity to the industry and have a strong viable career services program for the New England Club Managers Association.
Keep in mind the following thoughts as you enter your club each day:
PROFESSIONALISM:
We must always focus on our professionalism, keeping our ethical standards high, managing for excellence, treating our members and staff with equal respect and dignity and performing professionally and without bias.
IMAGE:
Our appearance, attitude, body language, mannerisms and behavior are generally the factors by which a manager is usually judged. A constant awareness of your presence should always be exuding a professional image.
EDUCATION:
A manager must always strive to educate his/her Board and members as to the purpose of the Club Managers Association of America and to the professional standards that most CMAA managers exhibit. The value of a CCM is worthless, unless those that can affect your future are aware of its value. Educating your Board and club members should be an ongoing process, so that, when a club is in the market for a manager, they will seek out a professional club manager that is a member of the CMAA and is striving toward personal excellence in the industry.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Continuing professional development in this industry is absolutely mandatory. The programs in place through CMAA and the BMI programs are exceptional. Professional development is, without a doubt, the best job security that one can find. Committing to personal professional development and to the development of your staff is paramount to success.
While speaking with managers, search committees and club presidents during the previous year, it is evident that considering the benefits of the above is usually ignored until it is too late. Setting the table for the next manger should be part of our professional responsibility and will, inevitably, help each one of us eventually. I have found that many clubs are unaware of the value and commitment that it takes to gain ones Certification. It is seldom that Boards have a clue as to the varied responsibilities that are shouldered by a club manager and the salary packages that should be offered to recruit a professional manager for a particular club.
It is only through a commitment of all managers that these messages can be taught to club boards and members. It is also a help to inform the Career Services Chairman of openings and, as important, when the position has been filled. As ECS Chairman, l am committed to confidentiality and am always available to discuss job openings with any NECMA member manager. Please note that we will never list a job opening for a club if the current manager has not been notified.
