VINEYARD GOLF CLUB, Edgartown, Massachusetts CLUB MANAGER
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: The Vineyard Golf Club is located in Edgartown, MA on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard. The private club, opened in 2002, has 290 Proprietary Members and 150 Island members. Annual dues for the proprietary members are $12,000 per year and, since opening, the Club has averaged 9,000 rounds per season.
Recognized as one of three organically managed golf courses in North America, the Club and Course Superintendent, Jeff Carlson, won the 2003 Environmental Leaders in Golf Award in the private club category followed in 2008 by The Presidential Award for Environmental Stewardship. The 238 acre course, designed by British architects Donald Steele and Tom Mackenzie, can best be described as an in-land links style golf course featuring revetted bunkers, fescue roughs and 69 acres of managed turfgrass.
The three-story shingle style 22,000 square foot clubhouse features hand hewn hardwood floors, a seventy-five seat dining room, golf shop, locker rooms, bar and library. The dining room is reputed to be one of the finest on the Island complete with an extensive wine list.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Club Manager (CM), hired by the Board of Directors, reports to the President of the Club and is responsible for carrying out the Board’s policies and procedures. With members from twenty-three different states, six countries and with memberships in some of the most prestigious clubs in golf, the CM will be expected to run a first class operation and maintain impeccable standards. The CM must be a highly visible, personable, hands-on manager dedicated to developing the spirit and culture of the Club.
The candidate must have strong financial and operational skills in order to work with the Comptroller in development, implementation and presentation of the operating budget. It is critical that he/she develop a strong relationship with the Executive Chef and front of house staff in order to enhance the current strong reputation of the food and service at the Club. In addition to Food and Beverage the following departments report directly to the CM: Golf Shop Operations, Facility Management and Administration. It should be noted that, in addition to the Clubhouse, the Facility Management Division is responsible for a 40-bed dormitory, three four-bedroom duplexes, three houses and a turf management building.
As the golf course and its maintenance operation are unique, the Golf Course Superintendent and his staff report directly to the Club President through the Greens Committee.
Finally, all candidates must be able to operationally handle the unusual seasonality of the Club as well as personally adapt to year-round Island living.
Compensation: The Club Manager will be appropriately compensated and granted benefits consistent with the scope of responsibility, experience and skill required. The Club will reimburse travel expenses incurred by candidates whom the Board invites to the final interview.
