EASTERN POINT YACHT CLUB, Gloucester, Massachusetts GENERAL MANAGER
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: Eastern Point Yacht Club, founded in 1924, is steeped in active sailing competition, having hosted numerous events that include Mass Bay Junior Championships and the Massachusetts Junior Olympic Trials. Active, aggressive one design fleets include the International 210’s and Rhodes 19. Currently, this private member-owned Club has 225 full/active members with additional members in subordinate classes. While sailing and power boating are at the epicenter of this very healthy club on all accounts, she enjoys a full range of social programs. Historic Gloucester, America’s oldest seaport, is only a train ride to downtown Boston, whose dominant skyline is visible looking south from the Club.
The main clubhouse features a dining room seating 52, Pub seating for 44, a snack bar, four guestrooms and kitchen. Men’s and ladies locker rooms are provided in the clubhouse as well. Sporting facilities include a main dock, moorings for 110 boats, swimming pool, Jr. Yacht Clubhouse.
The Club is somewhat seasonal, open 7 days per week, serving dinner 4 nights, for six months; and open for functions during the off season. Annual Club revenues are in excess of $1.4 million, with food and beverage sales of over $425,000.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: The General Manager has full responsibility for all aspects of operations reporting directly to the Commodore. He/she will lead the management team that includes the Member Services Director, Executive Chef, Waterfront Manager, Pool Director, Bookkeeper, Front Office Manager, Sailing and Junior Sailing Directors. The Club enjoys significant staff stability. In season, the Club employs 35 staff.
The underpinnings of the best candidate will be an effusive, friendly nature, a hands-on style, and one that will take input while offering options. Candidates must be technically sound in creating and defining a service culture that pervades the entire organization as well as provide a “can do” attitude that has been a theme of one’s work history.
As is typical in yacht clubs, committees are active especially in the sailing areas, yet the Club is very eager to empower a General Manager who will run the business and provide information and strategic options to the Board of Governors. While the Eastern Point Yacht Club is grounded in tradition, its members are eager to enjoy progressive programs and services throughout the Club. This is an opportunity to make a huge impact. An individual with at least some history of residing in a northeast coastal community is preferred.
The Club undertakes several capital projects each year, therefore experience in planning such projects would be useful. Successful budgeting and documented internal controls will be successes of top candidates as well. The Club is eager to consider both “emerging talent” as well as seasoned professionals. Review the club’s web site, www.epyc.net which has several recent newsletters available.
COMPENSATION: In the six-figure range, depending on qualifications. A performance bonus opportunity, and standard benefits and perks are included including CMAA.
