THE BOATHOUSE, Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts GENERAL MANAGER/COO
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: Martha’s Vineyard. While a resort destination in the minds of most, Martha’s Vineyard is a year-round community off the coast of Massachusetts with six different towns and over 25,000 year-round residents. The beaches, fishing, sporting and recreational opportunities including shopping are surprisingly extensive, as is the quality of health care and education and general social services the island affords. Access to Martha’s Vineyard, which is 7 miles from Cape Cod is provided by an extensive ferry system and eight regional and national airlines.
With both a waterfront and inland location, The Boathouse is a completely private club with all amenities except golf. This new club is being forged by four business professionals with longstanding ties to the Island. Their vision is to provide a new opportunity for families to gather with new levels of services on Martha’s Vineyard in a traditional private club setting. The Club has already attracted 35 founding members at $500,000 each (capped) and well over 100 additional members with the current initiation fee of $115,000.
The waterfront location, on the harbor in Edgartown, will be on the site of the former Navigator restaurant. This Main Street address is a commanding location overlooking the harbor, amidst the energy of Edgartown. It will be the home to formal and informal dining concepts as well as providing water access to the Club-owned fleet of sport fishing and sailboats, and power yachts.
Two miles away in Katama, members will enjoy the old world charm of a traditional field club, featuring the finest quality amenities including 8 har-tru and grass tennis courts, regulation croquet, and bocce ball. The fitness center and spa will be a premier, 5-star, island style facility with amenities including cardio, weight training and squash. The outstanding spa features 8 treatment rooms, whirlpools, saunas, steam, and locker facilities. The field club clubhouse will host locker rooms, informal dining, and a large multipurpose room for junior and social events. Centric to these facilities and the Club’s life will be high quality junior programming, as well as family, social and intellectual events. Tangent to the field house is the pool, junior pool and water features.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Club is seeking its very first General Manager to oversee all aspects of the operation. He or she will participate from the ground level shaping and defining the member experience and ultimately the future of the Club. He or she should bring superior club management skills in a variety of critical areas, including project management, start-up operations, membership marketing, F&B, and oversight of athletic operations, ideally with spa or fitness facilities.
Rooms experience is also a plus. Direct experience with Martha’s Vineyard and its unique culture is highly sought for this position.
The new GM will be responsible for recruiting, training and developing a top-notch club staff, which will be crucial to getting the Club off the ground successfully. This position is not for the faint of heart as the challenge of a startup is significant. Professional success that reflects creative thinking, creating a management team, shaping club programs and services are absolutely required. Most importantly, the successful candidate will provide a tenacious work ethic through pre-opening and in the first year of operation.
Compensation: An attractive package commensurate with appropriate experience including incentive compensation, customary benefits and full CMAA and housing or housing assistance.
