An internship is defined as a career or major related work experience usually lasting a semester or longer. It includes any experience during which students learn by taking on responsible roles as workers in organizations and observing and reflecting on the daily activities at the work site. An internship can be different from a job because it provides you with experience that relates to and enhances your college study. This means that you only have approximately three to five months to make the most out of your internship position! Let this listing be a guide to help you in selecting the right club and management style for you.
How this internship directory can work for you on a step - by - step basis
The internships are listed alphabetically by state. Use the Table of Contents for help in selecting the state(s) that you are interested in working in. Once you have located this information, look at each club individually and see what they can offer you.
Club Name, Address, Phone Number and e - mail:
Clubs have provided us with information on how to best reach them. This background information allows you to do some research on the clubs facilities, membership and location. Electronic resumes are readily being accepted everywhere! Just be sure that yours is easy to download. Also, always remember to send an original copy of your resume and cover letter to the contact that is listed.
Contact Person:
This person has been delegated by the club to be the contact person for their internship program. Send all correspondence to the indicated party and verify that they received your information.
Application Deadline:
Be sure to stay within these guidelines if specified by the club. Many clubs have extensive internship programs and they will need time to screen and evaluate their candidates who responded during within the recommend deadline dates. However in retrospect, if you have missed the deadline, if does not hurt to call or e - mail the contact person to see if there are any positions still available. Very often there are!
Internships: Paid and Unpaid
Internships come in all shapes, sizes and colors and some of these great networking opportunities will be unpaid. While it is great (and often necessary) to receive a paycheck each week, do not underestimate the power and glory of the unpaid intern. There are many options available to students who need to fund their own financial needs. Look into financial aid grants through your university, published resources on individual grants, scholarships and fellowships or consider taking a part time job. Keep in mind that clubs may offer room and board free of charge in place of a paycheck. It is expected that you are going to need some way to feed yourself, pay your bills and live. But you may find a way to make that unpaid internship pay off after all. Unpaid internships often lead to great well - paid permanent positions. In addition, many schools also offer credit for your summer internship. Before accepting a position be sure to discuss this with your prospective club. Cross check the requirements set forth by your school and make sure the club can meet those requirements.
Housing and Travel
One great incentive that clubs are offering to students is housing. Decide geographically where you would like to work and if that means traveling from Alaska to South Dakota, than so be it. Use your internship as an opportunity to learn as well as to travel to parts of the country/world that you would not otherwise have had the opportunity to. Be sure to use your resources to fully investigate the club, especially when you are looking to relocate. If this listing indicates that there is no specific housing available, be sure to inquire with the club¹s contact. They may have some housing suggestions for you. They will be a great help in finding adequate housing during your interim stay.
Internship Dates:
Managers understand that schools run on different schedules so very often they are flexible with start and end dates. However, be upfront with your supervisor as to when you will be starting or leaving your position. Clubs depend on their seasonal staff to be available for some of their busier times of the year (Mother's Day, Labor Day, Easter) and they will need to be able to plan accordingly to make sure that they have adequate staffing for the event.
Club Facilities:
This section was designed to give students an insight on what each club has to offer in the way of amenities. Club facilities ranging from tennis courts to dining facilities can be found in this section. Continue your research with the club itself. See if they have a website listing where you can further acquaint yourself with the club. Use this information as part of your preparation for your interview.
Duties:
Some clubs take the liberty of listing several of the duties and responsibilities that will be expected of their interns. Many of these clubs have very extensive internship programs while others may be looking for some part time work. This directory should act as your guide in finding what you are looking for in an intern position. After finding a company that you are interested in, be sure to have the right tools such as a resume, cover letter and interview techniques to get the position. NECMA/CMAA has many resources for these job search tools. Feel free to contact us for further information. The best way to find your ideal post graduation job is to practice and an internship is a great way to discover if this type of work is right for you. Good luck in your studies and in your search for a great internship. It's competitive world out there. Use your internship as an advantage for your future job searches.
