Clubs Collecting for Communities
NECMA Community Services - James Simmons, Chairperson community@necma.org
NECMA Celebrated Community Services Programs 2009

This annual community services event has helped thousands of needy people each year since its inaugural year in 1993. Through the campaign, we make a significant difference in the lives of the people within our local communities by pulling together to collect food, clothing and toys for those who do not have the money to spend on these items.
PHASE I: THE FOOD AND CLOTHING DRIVE October 15 through November 15.
All members are asked to bring their items collected to the following NECMA meeting sites: DROP OFF LOCATIONS: NECMA Educatin to be held at Rustic Kitchen Bistro.
The Food Bank will distribute your donation to our hundreds of member agencies throughout eastern Massachusetts. The result? Your food donation becomes part of a comprehensive hunger solution providing 1 million meals a month to hungry men, women, and children.
Every day we collect fresh, canned, boxed, and frozen foods as well as grocery products and distribute them from our warehouse. We also rescue properly prepared and perishable food from restaurants, caterers, hotels, corporate cafeterias and universities, which is then delivered directly to member agencies throughout greater Boston.
Please show your support by getting your club involved. Here's some information to help you get started:

NECMA Member Clubs bake and donate pies to Community Servings' Pie In The Sky
NECMA is proud to support Community Servings' Pie In The Sky as part of its Community Services Program - Clubs Collecting For Communities.
More than a fundraiser, Pie in the Sky fosters community spirit and engages the public in the mission of Community Servings -- Eastern Massachusetts' free home-delivered meals and nutrition program for the critically ill.
Each November since 1993, Boston's best restaurants, bakeries, caterers and hotels donate thousands of pies that over 350 volunteers then sell to family, friends and colleagues. Each pie costs $25, providing a week's worth of hearty home-delivered meals to a Community Servings' client and a tasty Thanksgiving treat to the buyer.
Corporate donors -- including Title Sponsor Digitas and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and Corporate Printing Sponsor UniGraphic-- provide financial support and donations of in-kind services. Thanks to the dedication and generosity of our pie sellers and volunteers, $.92 of every $1.00 raised in 2008 went directly to feeding Community Servings' clients.
Rest assured, when you support Community Servings through Pie in the Sky, your contribution goes directly to our neighbors in greatest need -- homebound individuals and families struggling with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

PHASE II: CLUBS COLLECT TOYS FOR THE U.S. MARINE CORPS' TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM December 1 through December 15
NECMA Managers donates toys to the US Marines Corps' Toys for Tots Campaign at The President's Gala on December 6, 2009 at Harvard Club of Boston in Boston, MA.
Marine Toys for Tots Foundation
Toys for Tots first began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and a group of Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. This campaign was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it nationwide. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns each year since 1948. And since 1980, Marines have distributed only new toys.
Today, Toys for Tots campaigns operate in more than 290 communities throughout the United States. Marines collect new, unwrapped toys in October, November and December. Thereafter, Marines distribute toys to the needy children of their communities through local social welfare agencies and church groups. The 2003 Toys for Tots campaign was the most successful campaign in the 56 year history of the programs. Marines distrubuted 15 million toys to 6.5 million needy children
The most common methods of community participation are:
Public Drop-off Site As a Public Drop-off Site, representatives set up receptacles in their organizations to collect toys or case donations and allow the public to "drop off" toys throughout the campaign. Promotional materials are provided to help advertise their participation in the collection drive. During the campaign, the organization's personnel periodically count and bag the toys. They then deliver the toys to one of the consolidated pickup site, or call the T4T HOTLINE to arrange for Marines to pick them up. The T4T HOTLINE is publicized throughout the campaign and donors wishing to be matched to the closest public drop-off site will call this number and be referred to your location.
Private Toy Drive The methods of operating a Private Toy Drive are the same as for a Public Drop-off Site except they are not open to the public.
Single Event Single events range from a holiday party to a softball tournament. Admission to the event may require the contribution of either a toy or cash donation. Sponsors of these events can receive promotional material and coordinate the pickup of any contributions made. Marines may be invited to attend the event to further promote the campaign.
Consolidated Pickup Site The logistics of transitioning the National Capitol Area picking up toy donations are grand in scale. A major contribution to these efforts could be made by becoming a Consolidated Pickup Site. Your location would be given to others who wish to donate toys they've collected, but who don't have the means of storing or transporting them to the Marine Reserve Training Center. They would then deliver the toys to your and a Toys for Tots representative will coordinate with your to schedule.
To have your Club be designated as one of the areas, to get the information you need to launch your toy drive or to schedule uniformed marines to come to your event and collect the toys, please visit www.toysfortots.org for the contact information in yoru area.
If you have any questions, please contact Erica Buschner at CMAA National Headquarters at (703) 739-9500.
