The future is approaching with remarkable speed, bringing with it new challenges and changes in the way the club industry will conduct business. Membership in CMAA guarantees that each new development will be met head-on and that you will be prepared to respond to change. Simply put, membership in CMAA is the best way to ensure you “GET IT.”
JOINING NECMA/CMAA
Affiliation with a professional group is an important consideration for each professional club manager for several reasons. Membership can:
- Greatly improve knowledge and competency in a chosen field;
- Give club managers the opportunity to contribute to the club management profession by service to the Association through the giving of time and talent; and
- Provide club managers with the opportunity to network, exchange information and discuss common issues and concerns.
A person, who at the time of applying for election to membership in the Association, is employed in a management position at a private club is eligible for PROVISIONAL membership. Provisional members receive all NECMA/CMAA member benefits with the exception of the right to vote or hold elective office. Provisional members qualify for ACTIVE status after 12 months of membership in the Association and by obtaining 15 education credits.
Applicants must apply simultaneously for membership in both the National Association (CMAA) and the New England Chapter which has jurisdiction over the prospective member's club located in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
To become a member of the Club Managers Association of America, an individual must first submit an application to the New England Chapter. CMAA has 50 chapters located throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East.
The New England Chapter meets on a regular basis averaging 10 meetings per year. Membership in NECMA is invaluable to the individual member because it provides opportunities for:
Educational and professional development;
Networking and exchange of information on issues of mutual concern;
Fellowship and contacts with nearby club managers; and
Participation in various social and civic activities.

- 80 percent of CMAA members' clubs are golf and country clubs
- 11 percent of CMAA members' clubs are city clubs
- 4 percent of CMAA members' clubs are yacht clubs
- 71 percent of CMAA members' clubs are IRS classified tax-exempt 501(c)(7) organizations
Club Income
- Gross revenues equaled $13 billion for all clubs in 2008.
- Food and beverage revenues equal $3.8 billion.
- The average club’s gross income is $5.5 million.
Club Employees
- Clubs employ 290,749 employees.
- Club payrolls equal $5.3 billion.
Club Outreach Programs
- Clubs raised $385 million for charities in 2008.
- In 2008, clubs distributed $7.6 million in student scholarships.
- Most of CMAA’s 46 chapters sponsor scholarship funds.
Economic Impact of Clubs
- Clubs spend $2.79 billion in their respective local community as a whole.
- Clubs spend $2.9 billion within their state as a whole.
- Clubs as a whole paid $351 million in real-estate taxes, $708 million in payroll taxes, $528 million in sales tax and $218 million in other taxes (i.e., liquor, excise, occupancy and school).
NECMA MEMBERSHIP - REAP THE REWARDS
Becoming a member of Club Managers Association of America, New England Chapter (otherwise known as NECMA) is somewhat akin to joining one of its member clubs. The membership of NECMA is an exclusive group of professional men and women with one purpose, the successful operation of those private clubs. The membership can seem somewhat aloof to an outsider, only because of the unusual nature of the profession, with its goal dedicated to excellence of service to others.
The New England Chapter has the reputation as the closest knit, most congenial and down to earth chapter in the National organization. The rationale behind this is the general consensus that while each New England Club is unique, we all face like challenges and attitudes from our members, as well as many cross memberships between our clubs. Therefore, we are all basically in the same boat and talking the same language. We, therefore, look forward to interacting with our peers as frequently as schedules and geography allow.
Another of the features of the Chapter is the earnest belief of its Board of Directors that it is their responsibility to "provide education to persons connected with the management of clubs and other associations of similar character, to promote and encourage efficient and successful club management, and to advance friendly relations among its members” (NECMA Constitution - Article III). Education has become the focus of the Chapter, with efforts to provide Spring and Fall two-day workshops with quality speakers allowing more viable access to education points. Each chapter business meeting includes an hour long education session, as well as briefly conducting the business of the chapter.
The chapter is now sponsoring annually the President - Manager - Pro - Superintendent Golf Outing which provides a venue for interaction between the Chief Executive Officer of the Club and his professionals. It is also providing the Purveyors Outing, the sole source of funding for the chapter's education needs, and for scholarships for deserving students in the hospitality industry.
And finally, the social events, not only at each monthly meeting, but also in August in Newport RI, and in January at the annual Holiday Gala, a formal dinner dance. To say the least, membership in the New England Club Managers Association has a lot to offer.
The New England Chapter web site, the first of its kind at the CMAA chapter level, continue to set the bar high for chapter web site with more useful features and service for its members. It is also the sole access to the myriad of information and educational opportunities offered at the National level of the Club Managers Association of America.
So if you are a member, join the fun. Volunteer and appear as frequently as possible. You will find the monthly Sites and Meetings listed on this web site. If you are a prospective member, JOIN NOW. There is lots to be done, lots to learn, and much camaraderie and peer interaction along the way. Hope to see you at the next meeting.
